Privacy Policy
Last updated: 1 September 2026
DeutschChat is a Chrome extension and web service that helps people read German-language YouTube videos. This policy explains exactly what we collect, why, and what we do not do.
What we collect
- Your email address. Used to identify your account and send login links. Stored by our authentication provider, Supabase.
- Your subscription status. Whether your subscription is active, when the current period ends, and the Paddle customer and subscription identifiers needed to keep that in sync.
- The words and captions you look up. When you tap a word, the word and the caption line it came from are sent to our server so a definition can be generated. These are stored in a shared cache so the same lookup does not have to be generated twice. The cache is not linked to your account — cached entries are keyed by the text itself and contain no user identifier.
What we do not collect
- We do not collect your browsing history, and the extension only runs on YouTube watch pages.
- We do not record which videos you watch or associate lookups with your account.
- We do not see or store your payment card details. Paddle handles payment entirely.
- We do not sell, rent, or share personal data with advertisers.
Who processes your data
- Supabase — authentication and database hosting.
- Paddle — our payment provider and the merchant of record. Paddle's own privacy policy governs the card data you enter on their checkout.
- DeepSeek — generates definitions and grammar notes from the word and caption line you look up. No account identifier is sent with these requests.
Where your data is stored in the browser
The extension stores your login tokens in chrome.storage.local on the device you logged in on. They are not synced across devices — sign in on each browser separately. Logging out of the extension removes them.
Retention and deletion
Account and subscription records are kept while your account exists and for as long as required for tax and accounting purposes afterwards. Email support@deutschchat.app to have your account and email address deleted; cached lookup entries contain no personal data and are unaffected.
Your rights
If you are in the EU or UK, you have the right to access, correct, export, or erase your personal data, and to object to its processing. Write to support@deutschchat.app and we will respond within 30 days.
Children
DeutschChat is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, we will email account holders before the change takes effect.
